AIPAS

AI accountability for policing and security
swirling ai graphic

AIPAS helps UK Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) balance the opportunities of Artificial Intelligence with the need for transparency, trust, and accountability. Led by CENTRIC in collaboration with Innovate UK, the North East Business Resilience Centre (NEBRC), and the Metropolitan Police Service, the project builds on CENTRIC’s global work on AI Accountability from AP4AI to deliver practical, UK-focused solutions.

AIPAS provides policing with concrete practical measures to ensure AI accountability of their AI capabilities across the full AI lifecycle from procurement or development to operational deployment, migration and decommissioning.

  • a comprehensive risk assessment and management approach for the adoption of AI into policing
  • proactive planning and putting in place required resources, procedures and safeguards for the responsible and accountable procurement and use of AI
  • oversight bodies can assess and review AI decisions and arrangements
  • policing can evidence that it is acting responsibly and accountably towards the public
  • transparency in the usage of AI in line with national requirements

National Citizen Consultation on the Police Use of AI in the UK: Acceptance, Trust and Accountability

CENTRIC carried out a national Citizen Consultation engaging over 10,000 citizens across all four UK nations (14+ years).

It provides a clear picture of public attitudes towards the use of AI in policing and security, and highlights how trust can be built, maintained, and – if necessary – restored. The report further details citizens’ acceptance and trust in AI across specific deployment scenarios, ranging from illegal migration to national security, as well their need for independent oversight for all deployments.
