Launch of Police AI
On Wednesday 10th June, the CENTRIC team had the pleasure of attending the launch of PoliceAI, which was opened by Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones MP and Lord Herbert of South Downs Chair of college of Policing. During the launch event, CENTRIC was among only 12 partners selected to showcase some of its AI products, services and advanced R&D. Other organisations included Microsoft, Google, Home Office ICT, and ACE.
PoliceAI, a new national centre dedicated to the responsible development, piloting and scaling of artificial intelligence in policing, is backed by a record investment of £75 million over 3 years. The centre is dedicated to developing and piloting, evaluating, and scaling AI across police forces across England and Wales, and it will be guided by a fundamental principle of using AI to improve public safety.
PoliceAI is set to become part of the planned National Policing Service and will publish a public registry of AI tools in use across policing, developed in partnership with CENTRIC. A first version will be available by the autumn
AI models will be independently tested for accuracy and bias, building on the government-funded rigorous approach already established for live facial recognition algorithms. This is vital in areas like evidence translation, where documents must be translated accurately to stand up in court.
