Luke Bates

Research Fellow

Luke graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BA in Criminology and Sociology followed by an MRes in Criminology from the University of Manchester. During his degrees Luke developed an academic interest in the study of terrorism and radicalisation. He dedicated his theses to this particular topic through conducting both theoretical work on lone-actor terrorists as well as by undertaking primary research into online extremism.

At CENTRIC Luke mainly works on the societal and social aspects of security research, such as the public acceptance of AI systems. Luke has applied his criminological background and knowledge to the study of surveillance, helping to carry out large, multi-stage, mixed methods research into the subject, but has also applied himself to research on terrorism and cybercrime.
